- FFXIV Beta Overview
- A "beta overview" article with a mountain of new screenshots and some
new info have just been published on 4Gamer, and this is enough for us
to whet our whistle with. Enjoy!
A Full Look at Beta: Round 1
As
most of you know, closed beta testing for FFXIV started Saturday, July
10th, which is the result of about three months’ worth of alpha
feedback.
The start of the game remains unchanged from alpha, and
the various beta changes have been discussed at length elsewhere, so
we’ll let the screenshots do most of the talking here.
Background music has been added to various cutscenes, and the visuals within have been brushed up as well.
The
UI is very accessible and user friendly and pops up on the right side
of the screen with a press of the ‘Home’ key and houses a variety of
commands such as those involving aetheryte use and other actions
available under special circumstances.
Blurred
distances. It’s hard to show the full effect in photos, but we could
really feel the effect when we started running about. Lighting changes,
on the other hand, are quite apparent.
The chat filter is another
welcome addition. Since FFXIV supports HD, it is likely we’ll be able
to split the chat window up into multiple panes eventually.
Beta at Our Fingertips
Now
that we’ve taken a crack at the actual beta release, we feel we ought
to revisit some things we’ve talked about in other play reports. Let’s
talk guildleves. By using ‘guardian favor’ during a quest, you can
receive a buff. Ours was an increase rate of skill ups.
This
favor is doled out automatically every twelve hours and caps at 200. The
cost of this buff is just one at a time in beta, but this may vary. It
makes this quite convenient and harkens back to Fields of Valor in FFXI.
New tutorial leves have been added, and the rewards for leves now seem to scale with difficulty properly.
Physical
bonuses can be divided up among your STR, VIT, DEX, MND, INT and PIE
(piety) stats. HP and MP increase automatically as your physical level
raises. Along with physical bonus comes an elemental bonus the player
can allot to fire, water, lightning, wind, earth and ice. For example:
if you put your points into fire, your fire-based weapon skills will be
enhanced and fire damage received from monsters will be lessened.
As
mentioned elsewhere, the ability to reallot bonus points has been
added. This was to complement the Armory system. Having to play as a
caster with a gladiator’s stats would be a grueling process, so
developers plan to accommodate players in this respect.
Retainers
Retainers
have now become hirable, though the fee that is said to accompany their
employ is yet to be added. It is in the Drowning Wench that players
will select their retainer, based on race and gender. From there you
will be presented with possible candidates and the choice of hiring them
or choosing someone else.
Retainers
can be deployed from Limsa Lominsa’s southeastern marketplace. This
creates an instanced area. On the first day of beta, twenty copy areas
were confirmed. Retainers can be used as a mule or bazaar, as you see
fit.
Another
point of interest is that ‘buy’ and ‘repair’ options have now been
added, as well. If you’re a crafter, perhaps they can gather materials,
skill-up and provide repairs for a nominal charge while you’re logged
off. Time will tell.
Instances, compared to standard MMO areas,
were far smoother. FFXIV’s required specs are rather demanding and
currently far from common. Many are worried about whether or not their
rigs can handle the game. However, instances seem to be close to what
the final product will probably be like, and I hope everyone has a
chance to experience their fluidity firsthand.
